MS Access 2003 Security Changes
OSH At Work, L&D-Pro and Training Provider are all currently offered in two variants:
- one for Microsoft Access 97; and
- one for Microsoft Access 2000, 2002(XP), 2003 or 2007.
If you wish to run any of these Software Products under Microsoft Access 2003, please consider the following before trying to do so.
In their efforts to reduce the potential for malicious code in Microsoft Access applications to cause damage, Microsoft have built a new security feature into Microsoft Access 2003.
If activated (which it is by default), this new feature will display warning messages if the user tries to open a Microsoft Access application which is not digitally signed.
Currently our products are not digitally signed.
If you wish to run our products under Microsoft Access 2003 you have two choices:
- get the warning messages every time you start the application; or
- turn off the security feature in Microsoft Access 2003.
Adopting option 2 effectively means that Microsoft Access 2003 will behave the way that earlier versions behaved in this regard - it won't check for digital signatures and you won't get warnings when opening applications which do not have a digital signature.

To Change the Security Level
If you decide to turn off the security feature it is strongly recommended that you have effective virus detection and removal software on your computer system (and it is kept up to date).
To turn off the check for digital signatures you must set the security level to Low. To do this:
- Open MS-Access 2003 (ie don't do this from within one of our Software Products).
- On the Tools menu, point to Macro, and then click Security. (If you do not see the Macro menu item under the Tools menu, or the Security menu item under the Macro menu, see the "Items Missing.." section below).
- Click the Security Level tab, and then select Low.
Items Missing From the Tools Menu?
If you do not see the Macro menu item under the Tools menu, or the Security menu item under the Macro menu, click the arrows at the bottom of the menu to display the hidden menu items.
If you still cannot see the Security command under the Macro menu:
- On the Tools menu, click Customize, and then click the Commands tab.
- Click Rearrange Commands, select Menu Bar, and in the Menu Bar box, click Tools | Macro.
- In the Controls section, click Add. The Add command dialog box will appear.
- In the Categories box, click Tools, and then in the Commands box, click Security. The Security command will appear in the Controls box.
- Use the Move Up and Move Down buttons to position the Security command where you want.
- Click Close twice.
